Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

Descriptive Summary of the curricular unit
This course unit aims at making students aware of the correct use of the Portuguese language. Therefore, students will come across a wide diversity of lively and updated means of expression and communication, so that they will become competent users, who will skillfully communicate, understand and express themselves both in speaking and in writing. By learning business communication techniques, students will develop their knowledge about their mother tongue, which will ensure them a better personal and professional command..

Objectives and learning outcomes
- promote the knowledge of the Portuguese language;
- improve the practice of the Portuguese language, both in speaking and in writing;
- adapt language practice according to the communicative situation;
- ensure that students will be provided with the adequate tools to better interact in a global society, by understanding the basic communication rules of the Portuguese language;
- make students aware of the correct use of linguistic norms;
- stress the importance of language as cultural heritage.

Skills to develop
As Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, students should grasp the rules of the language, in order to ensure a good communication bearing in mind the importance of the lusophone world. Students should also learn to use the language correctly, according to the different communication situations. Through the study of grammar rules, as well as the perusal of texts and writing practice, students will be able to apprehend the language they use, thus improving their critical thinking and their skills in understanding different communication sources.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

- Promote contact with the interpersonal communication functions;
This goal will be reached through the contents and practical cases provided in Sub Chapters 1.1 and 1.2
- Develop the levels of verbal / non-verbal communication skills;
In this case Sub Chapter 1.3 will be the source of contents more adequate to reach this specific goal
- Approach the communication strategies to face conflict or stressful situations;
Regarding this goal, the main points will be the contents related to SubChapters 2.3 to 2.4 and the practical cases provided during the sessions
- Identify corporate communication processes;
This goal will be reached through the analysis of practical cases included in Sub chapters 3.1 to 3.7
- Know the adequate methods and resources in order to present projects in corporate environments.
This goal will be reached after working the contents related to Chapter 4 of the programme.

Learning Methods

The working sessions will follow a theoretical / practical approach, thus combining the teacher's presentations with the corporate environment. The concepts and theoretical models presented will always be connected with real business situations.

Submission through the e-learning platform (Turnitin Data Base)

The groups should prepare and present a Project related to a specific topic. They should use the Power Point platform to present their projects.

According to the General Regulation:

a) All students will register their presence during lessons and, if their absenteeism rate is over 30% of the total number of lessons for each course unit, they will automatically be transferred to the final assessment modality of the regular season.
b) In written tests and evaluation elements referred to in sub-paragraphs b) to e) of paragraph 2 of Art. 32, a minimum score of 7.5 (seven point five) values is required.
c) In case students miss or obtain less than 7.5 in the written tests or the written projects, they will be automatically transferred to Final Assessmen of the regular season
d) In case students miss or obtain less than 7.5 in the second written test, they may only be subject to the Appeal season for tests.
e) All the written assessments included in the evaluation (reports, case studies, etc.) must be submitted through the Turnitin data base, available at the eLearning Platform. It would be accepted a similarity rate of less than 30%.

The practical or theoretical-practical work referred to in paragraph b) of no. 2 of article 159 of the general regulations may also be considered, with a weighting corresponding to half of that considered in the continuous assessment, provided that the student informs the teacher of this intention by filling in the appropriate form to be made available by the teacher at the time of the written test. 


Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

This goal will be reached through debates generated by the contents and backup texts
- Develop the levels of verbal / non-verbal communication skills;
In this specific case the goal will be reached through the commented reading of real examples
- Approach the communication strategies to face conflict or stressful situations;
In this specific case the goal will be reached through the guided approach of real communication examples
- Identify corporate communication processes;
In this specific case the goal will be reached through the commented reading of practical cases, followed by debates
- Know the adequate methods and resources in order to present projects in corporate environments.
This goal will be reached through the tutorial guidance conceived to support the development of the group projects.
