7th Framework Programme
The 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Progress (FP7) is the European Union's main instrument for funding research for the period 2007-2013. CORDIS is the official portal to consult to prepare for participation in FP7 and to follow all developments related to European science and technology.
How is FP7 structured?
The European Union part of FP7 is organized in four programmes corresponding to the four basic components of European research:
Cooperation
Support will be provided for a wide range of research activities carried out in international cooperation, from collaborative projects and research networks to the coordination of national research projects. International cooperation between the European Union and third countries will be an integral part of this programme. It is directed towards collaboration with enterprises and is organised in four sub-programmes: (i) collaborative research which will be central to European research funding; (ii) joint technology initiatives which will essentially build on the work carried out within the European Technology Platforms; (iii) coordination of non-Community research programmes; (iv) international cooperation.
Ideas
This programme should enhance the dynamism, creativity, and excellence of European research at the frontier of knowledge in all fields of science and technology, including engineering, socio-economic sciences and the humanities. This action will be coordinated by the European Research Council (ERC).
People
This programme seeks to strengthen human capital in research and technology in Europe through the creation of a coherent set of Marie Curie Actions.
Capacitites
The objective of this programme is to support research infrastructures, research serving SMEs and to increase the research potential of European regions (Regions of Knowledge), as well as to achieve the potential (Convergence Regions) of the enlarged Union and build an effective and democratic European Knowledge Society. Each of these objectives will be the subject of a specific programme. In addition, specific programmes will be established for the Joint Research Centre (non-nuclear activities) and for Euratom (nuclear research and training activities).
What are the thematic areas identified by the 7th Framework Programme?
1 Health 2 Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology 3 Information Technologies and Telecommunications 4 Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials, and new Production Technologies 5 Energy 6 Environment (including Climate Change) 7 Transport (including Aeronautics) 8 Socio-economic Sciences and the Humanities 9 Space 10 Security
The FCT's mission is to continuously promote the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge in Portugal, exploring opportunities that are revealed in all scientific and technological domains to achieve the highest international standards of knowledge creation, and to stimulate its diffusion and contribution towards improving education, health and the environment, the quality of life and the well-being of the public.
This mission is accomplished mainly through the granting of funding following the evaluation of the merit of proposals from institutions, research teams and individuals submitted in public calls, and through cooperation agreements and other forms of support in partnership with universities and other public and private institutions.
The results of FCT's activity are ultimately the added contributions of the individuals, research groups and institutions contemplated in its funding portfolio.
